Urban Decay has recently decided to make their products available in China.
So why am I disappointed? Because China is a country that requires animal testing. You can see their official statement here.
This deeply disappoints me because Urban Decay was always passionate about the topic, and vocal about how much they detest animal testing.---This really came as a surprise. :(
I will no longer be featuring or purchasing Urban Decay products. I am removing them from my cruelty-free list, and considering deleting posts containing their products.
"In my mind, Urban Decay is no longer a cruelty free brand. Their statement is a joke and they should just say outright that their only motivation is money. That is ok, they are a business, they are allowed to say that it is their only motivation.
I just don't think companies need to lie to their loyal fans with false reasoning. You can't say you are only entering a market so that you can try and change their despicable ways from within. This is a country that will not waver on their beliefs, and Urban Decay aren't going to change that .... and there is no doubt in my mind that the bigwigs at UD know this."--I wanted to quote this comment from Kimmi, she said it perfectly!

In closing, I'm disappointed Urban Decay.
What are your thoughts about this?

I read Urban Decay's statement, and while I can understand your disappointment with their decision to enter the Chinese market, technically, they are still not conducting animal testing; it sounds like the Chinese government is using their products to conduct their own tests. I can see that this is walking a fine line, since by entering the market they understand that this will be the case. However, I can also understand their point about raising consciousness regarding animal testing in a market that is unconcerned with it as a way to instigate change, even though, ironically, to do so they will have to implicitly condone animal testing. It's a slippery slope, and I do feel very unsure about it... Thank you for raising the issue and opening up the discussion!
ReplyDeleteI see what you're saying Sarah, but at the same time I really don't believe that they're trying to change China.
DeleteThey're using that as a cover for the fact that they're greedy---fair enough, they want to make money, but I just feel like they're being hypocritical, and compromising their beliefs.
Thanks Sarah! :)
Nobody can change China, they are stubborn as hell. They were even secretly putting anti-freeze in toothpaste cause it tastes sweet and is cheaper than sugar.
DeleteI've noticed a few people stating how strict China is about this kind of thing----so I can see what you're saying Sonia! It's a shame really.
DeleteAlso, anti-freeze in toothpaste? Wow, that IS scary!
oh no!!! Seriously, who makes it mandatory to have animal testing before you can sell their products?
ReplyDeleteI know, right?!

Absolutely Kimmi! My thoughts exactly.
DeleteThank you for the awesome comment! :)
Im dissapointed too
ReplyDeleteAw! :(
DeleteIt has disappointed me that MAC went the same way too. These are both companies which often based themselves on being cruelty free. I understand theres a big market for these companies in China however, more needs to be done to attempt to change the legal policies in China that require animal testing. I don't think with these companies giving in to China's laws that this will make them re-evaluate them. It's a shame really!
ReplyDeleteI know, it's really disappointing. I too understand that there's a market for the products in China, but if it was my decision I wouldn't enter the Chinese market until/if they changed their policies!
Deleteeek thats not good :/
ReplyDeleteI know! :(
DeleteAnother one bites the dust!!! Why is it so difficult for companies to QUIT TESTING ON ANIMALS OR EVEN SIMPLY CONDONING IT??? to me this is like seeing someone running tests on a small child that couldnt speak for themselves... I have to be a voice that stands up and against wrong doings. Its barbarick, medieval, disgusting. And by no means does my skin react the same way as a monkey, rat, cats, dogs, etc. Cruel and disturbing. I remember these thoughts when i think i want a product that was tested on animals & realize its def not worth it. Even though they arent officially testing it on animals themselves, they are basically turning their heads and saying its ok. A SAD SAD MOVE!!! and yes even a few people standing up and NOT PURCHASING PRODUCTS FROM THEM WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE & FINALLY GIVE A VOICE TO THESE POOR INNOCENT CREATURES THAT CANNOT SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES!!
DeleteExactly!
